The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is now deciding how to spend the remaining $3.6 billion in disaster relief aid. Some reports indicate that HUD is planning to divert almost all of this funding away from the Sandy-impacted region and to make different regions of the country compete for the funds. New York could see its share shrink by $1 billion.
If New York City loses this $1 billion in aid, at least 9,500 single and multi-family homes will not receive financial support to rebuild, according to data the Alliance for a Just Rebuilding has obtained from New York City’s Office of Management and Budget.
